The Illusionist (PG)

Our April film will be The Illusionist, an animation from the director of Belleville Rendez-Vous and based on an original screenplay by French cinema legend Jacques Tati.

The film tells the story of a dying breed of stage entertainer whose thunder is being stolen by emerging rock stars and is forced to accept increasingly obscure assignments in fringe theaters, garden parties and bars. Against the backdrop of 1950s Paris and Scotland, the Illusionist meets a young fan who changes his life forever.

The Illusionist is subtitled although there is very little dialogue in the film.

The Chicago Sun-Times said "'The Illusionist' represents the magically melancholy final act of Jacques Tati's career" while Empire Magazine described it as "Bittersweet, moving and utterly beautiful: a love letter to cinema and to Scotland."

The Illusionist will be shown on 25th April, at the Church Rooms, Church Lane, Lostwithiel. Tickets cost £4 for adults and £2 for under 18s, and are available online now or in advance from Watts Trading or on the door if not already sold out.
