Monday 26th May 2025
Doors and bar open 7pm, film starts 8pm
Our May film will be Io Capitano...
An acclaimed film which won top directing and acting prizes at the Venice Film Festival, is an epic, cinematographically magnificent odyssey from West Africa to Italy. The story is told through the mind’s eye and experiences of two Senegalese teenagers living in Dakar who yearn for a brighter future in Europe. Yet between their dreams and reality lies a treacherous journey through a labyrinth of checkpoints, the scorched Saharan desert, a fetid North African prison and the vast waters of the Mediterranean where thousands have died packed inside vessels barely fit for passage.
'A really joyous film... that increasingly becomes a confronting, realistic of the horrors of people trying to make the sea voyage... powerfully done with out-of-this-world cinematography.' Stephen A. Russell, Sunday Arts Magazine podcast
'Io Capitano is an astonishing achievement. This is – at times – a tough-to-watch story, but there is something unbreakable and defiantly alive being shown here too.' Graeme Tuckett, Stuff.co.nz
