Our November Film will be A Single Man.
Due to the major flood which affected Lostwithiel, A Single Man will be shown at St Bart's Church, Church Lane instead of Church Rooms. There won't be a bar but please BYO in return for a small corkage fee towards Church funds.
Based on the 1964 novel by Christopher Isherwood, the film follows an unhappy single day in the life of an unhappy single man. George Falconer, played by Firth, is an expatriate Englishman in Los Angeles, a bespectacled college professor teaching English literature. Falconer is a discreet gay man whose partner, Jim, has just died in a car accident. George will have this one final day at work and then take his own life.
This film was nominated for an Oscar, had 14 wins and 23 nominations. Colin Firth won 7 personal awards for Best Actor including a BAFTA.
‘Delicately, and rather brilliantly, Firth suggests how his quiet heroism is mingled with notes of irony and self-deprecation. It is a poignant, deeply compassionate portrait.' - Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian
‘A patient and never less than gripping character study that serves as a reminder of the emotional intimacy achievable on film.' - Peter Canavese, Groucho Reviews
Tickets cost £4 and are available online, from Watts Trading or on the door if not already sold out.
